Exhaust lengthining question 2008/03/21 04:14 Karma: 0
Hey out there, i love rippin all over town but hate when i get where im going and reek of gas... dont get me wrong i love the way a 2 stroke smells but my wife, and bartenders seem to turn up there nose. I have a plan of lengthining my exhaust to exit the rear behind the bottom bracket. I mocket up one from copper and am going to try cutting about 2 inchas above my muff and bending/extending/welding an extention piece and a hanger bracket. anybody try with success? failer? other?? thanks and i'll wait a few days and see if i get any posts with some info!
thanks
G

Hey G,
The problem with a longer exhaust is that it tends to increase the amount of back pressure, thereby slowing you down. It is also difficult to run with a straight pipe because of the noise. I think the best solution would either be:

A. Straight pipe with a glass pack to reduce noise.
or
B. A longer exhaust which uses a small diameter outlet, like the stock exhaust.

Cheers, Roland

ps... I think the gas smell could probably be coming from a leaky gas cap. I have never known the exhausts to smell or make a person smell. Gasoline has been combusted once it leaves the exhaust, compared to the fresh, wet stuff, sloshing around between your legs.

I'll agree with Roland here, lengthening the exhaust will cut top end performance.

How about a nice chrome turn-down exhaust tip?

you guys think there woulds be a backpressure problem if i cut the exhaust 2" above the muffler and welded in a 6-9" extention and welded the muffler at the end... im not planning on hacking it off, just extending it!
Thanks

That would probably give you a slight increase in low end/mid range power, but might make a little less at the top end....it should still rev freely though and I doubt you'll miss it. That is unless you run your bike at top speed all the time.
