I do not understand the logic of the speed limit for motorized bikes when I am being overtaken by pedal bikes (spandex nuts). If its unsafe for motorized bikes to go over 20mph, then its unsafe for pedal bikes, and all bike riders should have the same restrictions. I find it more dangerous that when a group of twenty spandex nuts have to go onto the roadway just to get around me. I understand that motorized bikes cant just go zipping up and down the streets of Tucson at any speed they want, but the speed limit should be high enough to keep up with spandex nuts. If I was in a vehicle, I would get a ticket for going to slow and hindering traffic!

you're kidding, right? i mean..you can't be serious. first of all, how often do you actually get over-taken by a pack of wild spandex? i ride my motoredbike everyday about 20miles. i might see 1 or 2 spandex. on the weekends they're a little more prevalent, but the best thing to do is when they come upon you, let them know you see them, and let 'em pass. they hate us. let's 'kill them with kindness' and show them we are respectful and responsible. that way, they have nothing to gripe about to city council. Roland and Fred and others worked very hard to give you the right to operate your bike at 20mph...without a drivers license, registration, insurance, etc. 20mph is just fine with me.

I passed a spandex guy a few days ago. It was pretty windy and since I wasn't having to bust my butt pedeling against the wind, he tucked in two feet of my right side a drafted me until I had to turn off toward my house. He loved my bike and thought it was pretty cool. I'm the only person I know of in Minnesota with one, but rest assured I'm trying to convert as many as I can. I need to get Spooky Tooth embroidered on my jacket cause the first ? out of everyone's mouth is where'd I get my bike and how can they get one. Keep up the good work Roland!!

Dont get me wrong, im not saying all spandex are evil...not at all. the topic of this thread was about the 20mph speed limit. Some spandex i've spoken with were pretty decent people, and dont have a problem w/our bikes. BUT the association they belong to, as a whole, has been trying to get us banned from using the bike lanes. If you search other states' laws, you'll find just about every single one requires some type of driver license. some also require registration, insurance and everything. that includes mirrors, blinkers, taillight and brake light. not sure, but maybe even emissions. thats a whole bunch of bulls#it.

well here in NC i believe that you need to register it if its either over 50ccs or if they can do over 35 mph over flat land

Well all the 20mph law did was put a law into effect that wasnt on the books. It is a little slow in my opinion, 25mph would be much better. I got a big 3 ticket a while ago for going 25mph, but was lucky enough to win my case in court (you can register a bicycle and therefore the law prevents you from acctually following it). Anyway, the best way to aviod the law if doing over 20mph is to simply ghost pedle at all times, they dont even look twice usually if they see you pedling.

lol
the part where you said "...banned from using the bike lanes" should be: banned from using their bike lanes 'cause that's how they see it... they don't think our bikes are bicycles

I will soon be new to the crew; I'm going through the same things in N.H. What ever happened to Live Free or Die!? Bike Week '08 here I come! Until I get more answers from the state, I'm just cutting power when I see any cops around.
One side, coming through!

SOOOOOO what I need to do is register my BIKE as a MOPED thing in az. get a plate, carry my license with me and if I get pulled over for going 21mph screw them?
Put lights on the bike, turn signals, like a whizzer and forget the 20 mile speed limit.
I am too radical for certain motor bike forum, maybe I can find a home here. I can't be political correct not about any subject, if you don't like it, might be cause it needed to be said and every one is too scared to speak up.
I know Roland worked hard for us, I do appreciate that. But I like to go 30 mph with my bike as much as possible. In PIMA county the Cops have been very cool about the bikse and Marana Cops have been cool too, Guess they have real crimes to worry about where Tucson PD is looking to make cash cows out of us.
so what to do? register my cycle or not? I don't have problems with that if it keeps Johny blue light off my rear tire!

Think "Custom Chopper".
Have bills of sale for both the bike, and the conversion kit. Build it. Then title it as a custom motorcycle or moped, depending on what the restrictions are in NH for "mopeds".
If it has to be titled as a motorcycle, you may have to make it streetlegal first.

Until I get more answers from the state, I'm just cutting power when I see any cops around. I'm in NH too. There is no speed limit for motorized bikes as such. Anything with a combustion engine that goes under 30 mph is a moped and must be registered. Therefore you must have a driver's license. Electric bikes are not metioned at all to the best of my knowlege. That is why I have a Wally E-Zip on the way. It only goes 18 mph stock. I believe I can make mods to make it go 30+ mph. Eventually I plan on marrying it with a HT. Using the E-Zip parts for stealth, power boost, starter and cool factor. How's the 'cutting power when I see any cops around" thing working for you? It sounds to me like the pull out method for birth control.

HOW HARD WOULD IT BE TO CLOSE THIS LOOPHOLE? Just add "over 20 mph will result in a speeding voiolation only". Do we need a lobbist? or can we just contact our state rep? what is the first step, lets take it.

What kind do you have? I've been riding a GoPed from Highland in St.Paul to my work downtown Minneapolis every day for 4 years, and now I have to upgrade to a sitting bike.
