Question about springer install. 2008/04/02 23:33 Karma: 0
quick question about installing the springer fork. I just got it yesterday, installing on a greenline BC-306 frame. i harvested the bottom crown race from the old fork and then installed on the springer. upon installing the new fork in the frame and screwing on the top bearing retainer, all seems perfect. the issue i am having is that there seems to be very little thread left for the top nut to grab onto after installing the spring plate. (see pic). installing and tightening the top nut seems to work fine, but the fact that it is latched onto so little thread concerns me. is it normal? is there something i should do/be aware of?

Thanks in advance.

Looks like the steer tube length is a bit short. You should really be throwing on a washer right there also like on a normal threaded headset. Longer steer tubes are available from us if you like. I wouldn't be bummed about it. Springer forks are generally never the correct length in the steer tube and most of the time need to be cut down to length.

Personally, not professionally, i would go with it. Install the top nut w/out the washer i mentioned and tighten it all down. The top nut is the retainer holding the it down. It is not as structural as the cone below it.

Do not forget to put an extra nut onto the back of the springer bolt where it sticks out in that photo. Bolts will rattle loose when scootin down the road and send you to the hospital if you dont keep your equipment maintained.

Cheers. Roland

i'm with spookyto on the install it and run it idea *unproffesionally* haha. i would however suggest red locktite on the locknut since you won't be using a washer with such little thread. also be sure your bearing race is seated COMPLETELY on the base of the steerer tube. you may find a few more threads if that lower race isn't down all the way.
