Frame/Engine Painting... 2008/05/17 01:44 Karma: 1
Has anyone had any luck using heat tolerant paint on the engine itself? I am considering painting my frame and motor Olive drab for a Para Military look.. Thinking i might cruise up to NAPA and asking what options they have for Brake Caliper or Engine block paints..

Any info would be helpful!

I painted my "military" bike with regular old Krylon paint. No high temp paint was use anywhere and the only place it burned off was the first few inches of the exhaust pipe. Even the muffler itself remain painted. I did sand off the chrome until it was dull and cleaned everything with brake cleaner before priming it or painting the final color coats.

No need for expensive high temp paint.

Thanks Joe!

Where do you have pics of said Military bike posted? I wouldn't mind seeing it!

The first photo is across the state line by one of dozens of abandoned houses in the area, that's a "no littering" sign. The second photo is right after I assembled it from the paint shop...If you look real close, you can see the only paint sacrificed in the operation of the bike is the first part of the exhaust, it turned a light grey after a few minutes of running and stayed that way afterwards (no rusting).

Finally, that was a "semi gloss" paint. I used that because I was thinking any kind of flat paint may absorb any wayward fuel and oil....although that may be a weathered look some would want.

That thing looks super dialed Joe! Nice work!

Very inspiringto see such a well executed version of the vision I have.

I think if I do mine, I will leave my springer fork, tank, and wheels black, sort of going for a dual color scheme...

I will post some pics of my bike tonight in the pics section.

Thanks!

Actually, form follows function.

The bike was a horrible ugly when I got it, so I cleaned/sanded/presol/painted everything that was bad....I wrapped the handlebars with gaffers tape because the chrome was almost non-existant.

Somehow I never managed to get paint on the coaster brake arm clamp, clutch assembly and throttle housing....
