Weird rubbing/whining noise 2008/05/21 02:22 Karma: 0
My bike makes a high pitched noise when I'm driving at speeds of less than ~7mph or when I'm going slow and not giving it much throttle. It doesn't make the noise when the clutch is engaged and the engine is turning and doesn't make the noise if I'm turning the throttle a little more. It sounds almost like the whine when a serpentine belt isn't mounted right on the engine of your car. Does anyone know what this is about?

By the way I have the 44 tooth sprocket

7 mph is too slow to be running the engine and trying to accelerate.

The whine you are hearing is more than likely gear whine.

Take off the right side cover, clean the gears with some carb cleaner or brake cleaner, and apply some red wheel bearing, or white lithium grease to the teeth of the gears. Just a little bit. Put two or three "drops" about the size of a pencil eraser on the gears.

I tried the grease and accelerating from 10+ mph and I still get the noise. It happens most when I'm going faster and I let off the throttle (especially if I'm going downhill). It does seem to be related to the gears or clutch because holding the clutch and revving the engine doesn't do it. So if I'm not on the throttle I get the whine, which is very rhythmic. I'm not sure what's wrong.

I'm pretty sure my weird noise it has something to do with the speed of the chain in relation to the speed of the engine. If I'm going downhill and not using the throttle to try to go faster I get the high pitched whining. Also, I've only gone 13 miles on my bike now and I've adjusted from the second to the third notch on the carburetor pin, but my bike is still pretty gutless going uphill. Adjusting the pin helped for the first half turn on the throttle and then it seems to bog down after I twist past that. Any ideas?

Here's a couple of ideas...first you want to check the chain run and sprocket alignment and make sure it's all good. Make sure the chain is not too tight- about 3/4"-1" of freeplay total upand down.

Second, put the clip back on the second notch down and put some break-in miles on the engine. Vary the throttle amount and RPM often for the first tank or three. Let the engine rev too, don't be afraid to wind it up a little- don't scream it, but don't baby it either.

Also, don't ride for prolonged amounts of throttle off, down hill riding. The engine isn't getting much lubrication.

you might also want to check the clutch plate adjustment too. Mine had a whining noise too and that was what was causing it. Theres a great section on that in spooky tooths installation manual.
