Not a great start 2008/07/04 05:50 Karma: 0
Hi all Im new to the MB scene and just need a litle help here. Well after 2 weeks of finding time and getting my bike going I take it out first day and started to break it in. Rode if for about 10mins and had a blast. After that I put it away for 20 mins and run to the store. When I get back and hop on, every thing is fine for first five mins then all of a sudden my engine just bogs out. I looked everything over and found nothing wrong so I try it again. Same thing engine bogs out. I then started it again but this time I pulled the clutch and just let it idle for a bit. Idles fine so I tried riding it again but same thing. I put away for night and started dinking with it again the next day. Started engine let it warm up then try riding but still it just bogs out. Is there something Im doing wrong or not doing at all? I made sure it had right gas to oil mix, set the carb adjust screw just right, checked gap on spark plug but all seem to be fine. I hope I didnt break the damn thing already. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Check to make sure the carb is on tight and the bolts holding the manifold to the engine are tight. Also, sometimes these engines leak at that gasket. Once it's running, spray some water, or WD-40 where the connections are. If it speed up or slows down, there is a minor leak there. If so, remove the manifold and coat both sides of the gasket with some RTV sealer or form-a-gasket. See if that works. BTW- the screw on the carb is an idle speed adjustment, not a mixture screw.

Check to make sutre you gas cap is venting (if you run it, and loosen the cap, does it run better?) Have you checked to make sure you are getting proper fuel flow?

+1 on the gas cap...that happens all the time. If taking the cap off helps, then make a tiny hole in the cap or make sure the gasket has a slot in it for venting.

Hi KrazyK,
I believe we spoke on the phone. To remedy the situation, I sent you a carburetor service repair kit. Please let us know how it turns out.

I am writing this for the benefit of the MB community. There have been issues with engines straight out of the box, where there appear to be intake leak type symptoms, but no remedy. When traced through the system, these symptoms, like what KrazyK described, are found to be faulty jet needles.

The difference between an intake leak and a poor taper on a jet needle is very slight. They respond the same, poor power, hard to start, and like to be run best w/ a little choke. The only difference between them is that an intake leak will have a sporadic idle that is all over the place, where as a mis-tapered jet needle will probably idle fine.

To clear up an intake leak, find out where the problem is coming from then seal up the area w/ gasket sealer, a new gasket, or by replacing the oil seal.

FYI, Spooky Tooth has a complete line of service parts from gasket sets to complete top-ends and crank case oil seals. Carb service ktis are $10

To fix the carburetor, simply replace the jet needle.

All carbs come from the same factory. Hence, a lot of the problems you find with the generic engines will also be present in the Starfire and Skyhawk line.
