Chain rubs rear tire need help! 2007/05/23 00:19 Karma: 4
I have a Diamond Back Della Cruz cruiser. It came with 2.125 wide tires.
I had to go with a 2.000 wide tire to clear the chain. But it still rubs the sidewall of the rear tire with the chain for the motor. I can flip the rear sproket to clear the tire but then the rear sproket will not line up with the front sproket and chain falls off. I do not want to go with a smaller tire and I have not seen how to move the motor over. Also, I had to cut the rear finder so the chain could clear. Which really caused the tire rub, but I could not have the chain hitting the fender. I've always made sure that the chain adjustment is correct, but even with the chain as tight as I can get it it still rubs. Does anybody have any ideal's? Thank You.

Yes, go to a smaller (1.90) tire. Loosen the chain a little, you don't want it "as tight as you can get it". Not good for the engine/chain/ sprockets. I had to change from MTB tires to 1.90's. They ride NICE on the pavement.

Thanks Joe, I guess I will go with a smaller tire. I do not ride with my chain as tight as it goes. I only did that to see if the chain would not hit the tire. I did not want a smaller tire because I like the look of the bigger tire, But looks are not as important as function. Thanks

Yeah, it's funny but my 2.125 MTB tires barely rubbed, but the 1.90 street tires seem to be nearly as close.

Guess it depends on the manufacturer.

I posted the same problem, I should have read this thread first. It would be nice if the tire that came with the bike have a smaller(narrow)size available. So they look the same but the rear have a narrow width. Wishful thinking?
Anyways I went ahead and purchased some 26 X 1.95, now I'm having second thoughts if it will clear since your 26 X 1.90 is already close to the chain?
One thing I did try was to lower the air pressure, seemed to work a little.

1.95's should be A-O.K.

the other thing you can do is to dish the wheel to the freewheel side. I have done this and the results were satisfactory. If you arent sure how to dish the wheel, just take it to a bike shop and have them do it they will charge you 15-30 dollars, same as truing a wheel.

Funny thing about the tread comment....I just took a set off a bike and they looked like they had a lot of tread left, but when I felt the tire, I could feel how thin the middle third had gotten in 750 miles. They still show tread though.
