Gas Pouring out of carb filter 2008/09/28 07:10 Karma: 0
This problem has just happened, and I am on my first tank of gas!!
I was riding the recommended 10 mins on 20 off, when I felt the power dropping off radically, I thought i had finally used up the first tank and hopped off to look, but what i noticed was gas running out of the carb filter, so I closed the pet cocks and pedaled back. I thought maybe the gasket for the carb had come loose and tightened the 2 screws that hold it on but that was absolutely useless. I am 3000 miles from home in Long Beach CA and would appreciate any help. Thanks in Advance

i have the same problem with the gas leaking out of the carb but i dont have any performance issues. my problem stems from the way i mounted the motor. i mounted it in a way that the carb is tilted down slightly instead of being level of above that level plane that i assume was ment to be mounted at. maybe remounting the motor could help.

Float sticking? (tap the carb) it should stop.
Carb float bowl screws tight?
Crud in the float bowl?

Well I took it off and looked inside but everything seemed to be in order. The little plastic float floated on the gas and the shut off valve stopped the flow....., for awhile, then it started to run out of the carb again. all screws are tight, so it is a conundrum wrapped in a riddle. No gunk or junk in the bowl to speak of, actually it was cleaner than expected. I'll look at it again tomorrow as I am an engineer onboard a ship in Long Beach, I do have access to tools, gasket materials and other doohickeys and gurlywigs.

Just going to take a second here and thank you Bikeguy , not just for answering my query, but for giving me reading material as I waited for my bike to arrive.

I think the little "bullet" is not stopping the fuel flow completely once the floats have come up to where they belong.

You could try adjusting the float tabs (brass "forks) so it shuts off a little sooner.

Well it seems that now it doesn't pour out until the engine is warm. Then it runs out again, Dammit I thought I had fixed it.

Sorry about the late replies but I have to leave the ship and go to an internet cafe to get online.
I did adjust the little forks and it is like what i wrote above. I'll get it right.

Look very closely for little bits of crud in the fuel shut off "jet" where the floats shut off the gas flow. You may have a nick in it, the rubber on the "bullet" is damaged somehow, or tiny little bits of crud are getting in there and causing the float to stick.

Also, look closely for anything or reason that would cause the floats to stick intermittantly.
