Hello. I bought my bike from Spooky tooth about 5 months ago. This happened on Tuesday: http://worldlooksred.smugmug.com/gallery/6464624_AoUnJ#41000298_NeMsa I was offered a new frame at cost. I just thought others should see what can happen. I was moving at appx. 25 mph when this happened, and the back wheel locked as soon as the engine broke loose. I went into a 20+ foot skid, and only survived because I was on a neighborhood road as opposed to a major artery with lots of traffic. Enjoy your bikes. It could end at any moment. Did you have the frame drilled there for the motor mount to weaken it? Any idea what caused it to break? I should start wearing a helmet. Glad you are okay.
The way it worked out on my bike I had to use a piece of flat iron with 4 hose clamps to secure my front mount to the frame so it would fit without drilling the frame. Worked great, really solid. can't upload a photo for some reason though.

I don't know if there was a hole drilled there; I got the bike delivered partially assembled, so the engine was already mounted. If there is a possibility of a hole drilled in the frame, that'd certainly explain why it happened in that exact spot, though.

How many miles you got on that thing? What kind of surfaces do you ride on? What is your riding style? How about maintenance routine do you use?
All factors in a broken frame. I have seen a few frames break, some aluminum, some steel. It can happen, be careful.

How many miles you got on that thing? -I ride about 5 miles a day, for 5 months. So, about 600 miles on the bike, give or take. What kind of surfaces do you ride on? -All riding was on almost entirely flat roads only. What is your riding style? -I never maxed out the engine, as I prefer to ride in neighborhoods and avoid major roads whenever possible. Safety first, and all that. How about maintenance routine do you use? -I checked the gas tank bolts, the wheel nuts, the engine bolts, and the carburetor clamp before every ride. Those are the ones that I found to be easily shaken loose in the first week of riding. Additionally, about once a week I checked the bolts on the handlebars, the seat, the chain tensioner, and the tire pressure. My bike was gently ridden, well cared for, and broke in half after 5 months. NOT because of anything I did wrong.

I wasn't implying anything, just asking.
I never was a fan of the through the frame mount myself.

Bikeguy Joe: Sorry if it sounded like an invective; the bike was just the last good thing I had going for me over the past few months, and I was still a little upset about it. But, obviously, not your fault.
I guess I would've done better getting my bike completely unassembled, then I would've know about the mount method. I never would've proceeded with hole drilling in a load bearing frame bar if I'd known about it!

yo that's crazy! sometimes i feel like that's about to happen to me. i'm just riding along 25-30, hoping every moment that the bike keeping me going doesn't just fall apart (wheel fall off like i read somewhere else, now frame busting in 2). i've got about 400 miles on mine now. 200 more to go... funny how if you read the FAQ, they say the engine can last about 10k miles. they didn't say anything about the frame.

I had s similar thing happen to me, but with one exception. I drilled a hole out of the seat tube before I found out that I did not need to, So I left it sitting there. On the down tube I also drilled a whole and mounted the motor, But the thing I did differently was to put the mount between two rubber grommets. Finally what happened was that the tube that I left alone looks like it was cut in two by a hacksaw and the one with the rubber mount was still ok. Looks like I have some welding to do in order to get my "rig" on the road. With this old bike its almost more patches than tubes already. Mike-older fatter, but no wiser-Frye A.K.A. frye Bikes

All bikes are different, even two alike that are set up by two different people. These are not a built in Japan motorcycle fo'sho'!

The thing that perplexes me is how clean the break is...Regardless of the material, a tube that is stressed will deform/fold before snapping...in picture 2 you can almost make out the hacksaw marks...It also appears in that picture that the break is actually under the mounting plate for the motor mount...I think someone sabotaged your frame...Either an attempt to hurt the rider or Spooky's reputation for quality, at any rate its just my opinion...Scott
