We think the Izip electric bicycle company has one of the most ingenious electric motor designs we have seen for electric bikes.

If you are familiar with a bicycle freewheel, you will know that you can pedal forward, and then turn the pedals in a backward rotation and you are not losing any forward momentum. What  is so cool about the Izips, is that they have 2 bicycle freewheels on the rear axle, one for the pedal drive (right side) and one for the electric drive (left side). The benefit of this "flip-flop" hub design is that your pedaling will move the bike forward without any resistance from the motor, and the motor will move the bike forward without any resistance from the pedals. By removing the losses from motor drag, Izip electric bicycles achieve a high efficiency for battery range and effortless pedaling. Also, the Izip company saw it as one of their goals to be in every independent bike shop in the country. They positively knew that bike shop folk would take a fine comb to their products. This is why they have done such fine job at incorporating the highest quality components, from high grade hardware to double walled Veronique rims. Izip is quality for the money.
